Martin Wind Brings bassists - and musicial worlds - together

Those who are only familiar with bassist Martin Wind's jazz credentials—both as a leader and as a first-call sideman for Bill Mays, Dena DeRose, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, and numerous other A-listers—may be surprised to hear him showcase Baroque bona fides on the bookends of his latest release: two different performances of J.S. Bach's "Air." But a broad embrace of classical music is of a piece with his background.

Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius oder Eberhard Weber gebührt das Verdienst, den Bass vom schnöden Begleiter und unscheinbaren Pulsgeber zum erhabenen Soloinstrument aufgewertet zu haben. Und nun versuchen sich gleich vier Kontrabassisten unterschiedlichster Herkünfte unter der Führung des nach New York ausgewanderten Flensburgers Martin Wind an der Ressourcenfülle ihres Instrumentes.

Sonically the range covers four octaves but mood-wise the range is even wider. The album is bookended by the title track, J.S. Bach's "Air," beginning with a quartet version and concluding with a trio version. In one sense, other than for purposes of symmetry, its solemn tone makes it a strange choice for an opener. That quickly changes though with the playful "(Give Me Some) G-String." The jaunty melody seems familiar, with each bassist taking a turn, while the others support gleefully.
